Jennifer Dulski

President & COO at Change.org

Archetype 1: The Advisor
Behind any good Advisor is an ability to distill life lessons into short, memorable soundbites. To find your Advisor, seek out people who excel at things you want to learn, and ask for guidance.

Archetype 2: The Role Model
The Role Model mentors by doing. To find a Role Model, look for someone who’s living the life you envision for yourself. Then ask them how they did it.

Archetype 3: The Listener
In a world of rapid-fire texts, Tweets, and chat messages, there’s something so unexpectedly fresh and welcome about a real Listener. Seek out someone who’s not afraid to try to “get inside your head” by asking probing questions, as a good Listener has a voracious appetite for understanding, and can make you better because of it.

Archetype 4: The Motivator
The motivator maintained an incredibly high level of energy that left people feeling excited to get back to work. To recognize a motivator, look out for someone who reminds you of your greater purpose. You’ll likely leave conversations with a Motivator feeling energetic and empowered.

Archetype 5: The Achiever
Ultimate Achiever setting a high bar for himself and for his team. The pressure to accomplish greatness can be overwhelming – but if you embrace it, that pressure can push you to a level beyond what you think it possible. It’s easy to identify an Achiever mentor: look for the people who set high standards for themselves and who push you beyond your comfort zone. And, instead of pushing back against their high expectations out of fear of failure, try to live up to them. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish.

Continue reading »

“Xbox One is designed to deliver a whole new generation of blockbuster games, television and entertainment in a powerful, all-in-one device.”

How Xbox One Plans to Fight Sony, Steam, and Everything Else

The front is nearly without embellishment; even the optical disc drive slot blends into the frontpiece of the box. On the whole, it looks more like a TiVo than any gaming console I’ve ever known.

The humplike battery pack on the controller’s underside is all but gone; the triggers and shoulder buttons are carved from a single graceful swath of material.

Quantifying graphical performance is notoriously squishy. That being said, Microsoft touts the Xbox One as delivering 8 times the graphic performance of the 360.

If the revision of the console consisted mostly of upgrades to its components and architecture, the Kinect received a head-to-toe retooling.

It’s essentially like turning each pixel of the custom-designed CMOS sensor into a radar gun, which allows for unprecedented responsiveness.

Sundar Pichai

SVP, Chrome and Apps, Google

Can’t it be confusing having two operating systems?

It’s a world of multiple screens, smart displays, with tons of low-cost computing, with big sensors built into devices. At Google we ask how to bring together something seamless and beautiful and intuitive across all these screens. The picture may look different a year or two from from now, but in the short term, we have Android and we have Chrome, and we are not changing course.

As Android’s new head, what do you see as the biggest challenge?

I see huge opportunity, because it is just shocking how much of the world doesn’t have access to computing. In his book Eric [Schmidt] talks about the next 5 billion [the people on earth who aren’t connected to the internet who soon will be]. That’s genuinely true and it excites me.

What does that mean when a company like Facebook comes out with Home, which changes that experience?

To Mark [Zuckerberg], people are the center of everything. I take a slightly different approach. I think life is multifaceted: people are a huge part of it, but not the center and be-all of everything.

Talk about Samsung..

Historically the industry has had long stable structures. Look at Microsoft and Intel. They were very codependent on one another, but it served both of them well. When I look at where computing needs to go, we need innovation in displays, in batteries. Samsung is a world leader in those technologies.

Finally, you had a pretty full plate with Chrome and Apps, and now you’re handling the world’s biggest phone platform in addition. How are you managing?

I have a secret project which adds four hours every day to the 24 hours we have. There’s a bit of time travel involved.

Ron Baker

Founder of VeraSage Institute

If one were to lay the two theories of value<del>––</del>labor and subjective<del>––</del>side by side, it would look like this:

Cost-Plus Pricing<del>––</del>Labor Theory of Value

Product » Cost » Price » Value » Customers

Pricing On Purpose<del>––</del>Subjective Theory of Value

Customers » Value » Price » Cost » Product

Cost-Plus Pricing, RIP

Cost accountants focus on the inside of an organization, yet all value takes place in theexternal world, beyond the four walls of the organization. By and large, accountants are not well equipped to judge and measure value, despite all the recent blather about activity-based costing.

A Tale of Two Automobiles

When Lee Iacocca developed the Ford Mustang, he reversed the order of the usual car-making pricing up to that point. Rather than giving his engineers carte blanche to develop a sports car and then marking up the resulting costs to arrive at a price—as GM did with the Corvette—he solicited the opinions of potential customers as to what features they would want in a sports car and what price they thought they would be willing to pay.

Knowing people liked the Corvette, but thought it was too expensive at $3,490, Iacocca wanted the price to be low enough to entice the potential sports car enthusiast. He then went to his engineers and asked if they could manufacture a sports car, with the desired features, sell it for no more than $2,500, and still turn an acceptable profit for Ford.

By building the Mustang on the Falcon’s chassis, in the first two years, it generated net profits of $1.1 billion (in 1964 dollars), far in excess of what GM had made on the Corvette. The average customer was spending another $1,000 on options, and while Ford projected that 75,000 units would be sold in the first year, the 418,812th Mustang was sold on April 16, 1965, only 13 months after the first rolled off the assembly line.

By comparison, the Corvette reached 1 million in sales in July 1992, with the release of a white convertible with red interior, mimicking the first one introduced in 1953.

Founder & CEO at Zuckerberg Media

Inbox Zero 的意思，就是「所有電郵都已讀，或處理好，又沒人再寄任何電郵給我。」

為什麼要做到零電郵？

Like cleaning out your home, clearing out your inbox feels great – like you’ve cleared your debts, decluttered your existence, and you no longer owe anyone anything. You can breathe a bit easier. At least for a minute or so, until another email comes in, and you’re no longer at inbox zero.

零電郵的方法是什麼？

Unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters or sites you may have accidentally subscribed to by forgetting to uncheck that pesky box when you created an account on the site.

Remove yourself from any groups, lists or coupon sites that send you messages every day. A message a day will clutter up your inbox rapidly and you can very easily search for coupon codes and discounts online, even without the daily email barrage.

Create filters and folders that will automatically sort your messages as they come in.

Turn off email notifications: do you need to get an email every time someone tags you in a photograph, or about every single flight deal heading to Hawaii? Go to the various websites you have profiles on, go to settings, and opt out of email notifications.

最困難清除的電郵及如何處理

1) Emails that you hate having to say no to.

A colleague asking for a favor or an introduction. A family friend asking if you can pass their resume along. An organization asking you to sponsor their event.

Consider having a friend or colleague draft a response for you. Sometimes it’s easier for someone who isn’t emotionally tied to the response to craft a reply.

I encouraged everyone on the team to create a folder called “It’s okay to say no” – I was having a lot of guilt saying no to people and was letting requests pile up in my inbox.

2) Messages that aren’t urgent, but will need a reply in the future.

I made a folder called “People to reconnect with” because I found I was saving emails in my inbox from people who I eventually wanted to respond to, but didn’t need to email back right away. This cleared out a lot of space.

3) Emails that make you feel good, but don’t warrant a response.

I created a “Go me!” folder — I know that sounds shallow, but there are so many bad vibes online sometimes that it’s important to have a pick-me-up folder of positive vibes from people that you can look at when you’re having a bad day.

Gijs van Wulfen

Founder of the FORTH innovation method, Author & Speaker on Innovation

1. Start without a business need. It’s as simple as that. So, if your company’s current business is booming, it’s unlikely that the people in your organization will readily break with their habits. Don’t try to convince others to innovate when there is no business need; you will be turned down.

2. To first appoint an innovator. You can invent on your own. But in an organization you can never innovate alone! You need R&D engineers, production managers, IT staff, financial controllers, marketers, service people and salesmen to develop or service the product, produce it and get it on the market. The moment you appoint an innovator, you run the risk that everyone else will lean back and wait for the appointed innovator to come up with his or her innovations.

3. Start with your idea. Innovation is about getting the right ideas and realizing these ideas in practice. The global symbol for innovation is a bright, shining light bulb. Once an idea comes to you, you’ll probably fall in love with it. That’s a great feeling. But, unfortunately, love is blind.

4. Bet on one idea. For every seven ideas for a new product, about 4 enter development, 1 to 2 are launched and only 1 succeeds[2]. Therefore, never bet on one ship. There’s a huge risk that it won’t return.

5. Start with a brainstorming session. I love this quote by the American businessman Dee Hock, he says: “The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it. Once you get the old ideas out of your mind, new ones come automatically!”

6. Start by neglecting customers. Meeting potential customers to discover their frictions belongs to a set of highly effective techniques you want to apply when creating new product ideas. Don’t go looking for what your customer wants. This is because customers, themselves, aren’t always able to articulate their needs. Start by exploring customers’ relevant future problems. You’ll soon find that neglecting customers in your innovation will lead to a dead-end street for sure.

Ryan Holmes

CEO at HootSuite

1. Be loyal. In business, loyalty can be a huge asset. I’ve learned that surrounding yourself with a loyal team is one of the key factors to success. BUT, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. Blind loyalty helps nobody. If I know that a team member is—after a certain fair amount of time—not doing the job they were hired to do, or if a business ally is starting to look out for only his best interests, I will make the tough call to part ways.

2. Trust your instincts. In business, it can be very important to trust your instincts. Faulty data, miscommunications, even people with interests that aren’t aligned with your own can get in the way of making the best decisions. It can also waste a lot of time to be constantly second-guessing things.

3. Know what you want and be super persistent about getting it. Persistence pays, and nobody knows that better than a dog. I’ve often been told that I am also very persistent when it comes to work. Indeed, I had to be when it came to finding the funding that launched my company. But many of my successful colleagues share the same trait. It’s very, very important in business to not give up. Legend has it that Walt Disney was turned down by 302 banks before he got the funding he needed to open Disneyland.

4. If you’re going to do it, do it 110%. Once you’ve decided to do something (after assessing the potential risks and benefits), why not reach for the stars with it? I’ve found that in business, if you strive to hit a place one or two steps beyond the foreseeable goal, the realm of possibilities expands. It’s how I plan things and I like to encourage my employees do the same: push past boundaries and pursue opportunities that they might have initially thought impossible or too big.

5. Unplug. Go outside and play. I answer hundreds of emails a day, but I’m also just as active in things like yoga, cycling and rock climbing. I love the outdoors. I make an effort to ensure that I’m not stuck in an office staring at a screen for hours (or days) on end. With technology penetrating our lives and jobs more than ever, it’s easy to be online and working 24-7. But it’s very important to regularly de-stress and refresh your mind and body. In fact, there’s a lot of research that suggests exercise can even improve productivity.
